All our beds are hand made in our factory in Gosport, Hampshire, England. Our beds are built using wood from sustainable sources, and our suppliers comply with FSC and PEFC guidelines. Where possible all our fixings and consumables are UK produced and locally sourced.
We use 70x70 mm timber for legs and 19x95 mm boards for all horizontal rails and slats, all visible exterior members are profiled or have a double bull nose
Our beds are constructed utilising mortise joints for all the horizontal rails that locate the mating faces 15 mm inside the legs. It takes about three times as long to build one of our beds compared with one that uses butt joints and dowels, but the resulting bed is infinitely superior.
You won’t find any pencil thin dowels in our beds! We glue and screw the head and toe board rails into the leg posts, ensure they are square and then set them aside for 24 hours to allow the glue to set before hiding the screws under wooden plugs which are then shaved flush with the surface.
When all that is done we oil the finished frame. We have tried numerous finishes and oil has produced the best most consistent results.
We tried to take apart one of our frames once the only way we could do it was to smash it to bits, destructive testing at its very best!
The side rails join the head and toe rails together and support the slat deck which in turn supports the mattress. We glue and screw the deck support rails to the side rails; this in effect adds over 50% to their strength. The side rails locate and are tightened using barrel bolts, these hold the bed together.

The frame is designed to flex slightly, because of this the larger frames incorporate support slats under the slat deck itself to help equalise the load. The slat deck is made from the same size timbers that are used in all other horizontal parts of the bed, they are predrilled and countersunk for screws, these screws securely attach the slats to the side rails and prevent the slats being forced through the gap should the side rails deflect under load.
We don’t use flimsy little slats in our beds; they are built to absorb punishment!
Our beds come to you partly assembled, it takes about twenty minutes to put one together, and if done properly the resulting frame is strong enough that it can be lifted by one corner and it will not break. The frame is light enough that once the mattress is removed one person can easily lift it for all those essential tasks like hovering underneath it!
Because we make all our beds in-house, we can also alter our frames to suit any requirements you may have, and it is not as expensive as you may think! There are numerous customisation options on our page, all of which are readily available. If you have any questions just give us a call and we can advise you on almost anything that can be done on or in one of our beds! |
